FAQ

  • How do I reserve a date?

We aren't able to hold dates unless a contract has been signed and a non-refundable deposit has been paid. Once the contract has been signed and your deposit is received, your event is reserved on our calendar.

  • How many guests can you accommodate?

We can host up to 150 guests on our property, however, more than 75 guests will usually require the addition of an outdoor tent. Tent rental is separate and the responsibility of the client.

  • Is set up and clean up time included?

All hourly rentals must factor in set up and clean up time to the total hours rented. Our weddings packages already include designated set up and clean up times.

  • Do I need event insurance?

All clients must have Event Liability Insurance in the amount of $1,000,000 and Hill House Durham must be named as an additional insured on the policy. If you are planning to serve alcohol, you will need to include that option on your policy as well.

  • Do you have a required vendor list?

We are happy to provide vendor recommendations but you are allowed to use any vendor you like. We do require weddings to use a licensed/insured caterer if food is being served. as well as a licensed bartender if alcohol is being served.

  • Do you allow alcohol?

If you are serving alcohol at your event, you must comply with all local ABC laws. We do require a licensed bartender for weddings and highly recommend it for hourly rentals as well. If you are planning to serve alcohol, you will need to include that on your event liability insurance policy.

  • Do you offer in-house planning services?

While we do not offer in-house planning services, our Director of Operations will meet with you and talk through all the things you need to consider when planning your event at Hill House. We are also happy to recommend one of the planners we work with on a regular basis.

  • Are there restrictions on decor?

As a historic venue, we do have several. No decorations may be permanently attached to the walls, ceilings, or woodwork. Only flameless candles may be used inside the house or on the veranda. No rice, birdseed, confetti, glitter, or sparklers may be used indoors or out. No fog machines may be used indoors.

  • Is there parking on site?

We have 13 parking spaces in our lot, plus one handicapped parking space. There is street parking available on both Cobb and Proctor Streets.

  • Is the venue wheelchair accessible?

The porches and the first floor of the house are accessible via a ramp. We also have a handicapped stall in our main restroom. The upper floors of the house are not accessible by wheelchair.

  • Do you offer any discounts?

We offer a 25% discount from all posted rates to non-profit organizations as well as all members of the Junior League of Durham & Orange Counties.

  • Is smoking permitted on site?

    No.
